　　文中內容是以普法戰爭爲背景，主人公是一位生活在社會最底層，受人歧視的xx，有一輛法國的驛車在離開敵區時，被一名普魯士軍官扣留，軍官要求羊脂球陪他過夜，否則驛車就不能通過，但是羊脂球出於自己愛國之心，毅然拒絕。可是同車上的有身份的乘客爲了自身利益，逼她爲了大家而犧牲自己，在無情的威脅之下，羊脂球被迫做出無奈的選擇，救了大家。然而當第二天驛車出發時，那些乘客很無情的疏遠她，不再與她講話。彷彿她是一個病毒一般，完全忘了自己的自由是她犧牲自己換來的。
